Children and Chiropractic
Children are not small adults. Their joints, their posture, and the way they move put different demands on the body, and the care has to fit that. In chiropractic care for children, we use a gentle, low-force approach scaled to the child's age and size.
How care for children is different
The exam comes first, and the technique stays light. For a child, that means soft pressure or a low-force instrument rather than a forceful manual adjustment. A parent stays in the room throughout. The aim is the same as with adults, a joint that moves freely and a nervous system free of unnecessary irritation, reached with a far gentler touch.
Infants and the early years
Many parents bring a baby or a toddler rather than an older child. Birth is hard on a small body. The squeeze through the birth canal, or the pull of a forceps or vacuum delivery, strains a newborn's neck and spine, and that strain shows up in the weeks that follow. The care for the youngest patients is lighter still, no more pressure than you would use to check a ripe tomato.
Colic and constant fussiness
A colicky baby cries for hours with no clear cause, and it wears a family down. Much of that early tension settles in the upper neck, where it leaves a baby uncomfortable and hard to soothe. Gentle care eases it. Both research on infant colic and what we see in the office point the same direction: calmer babies and less crying after a few visits.
Recurring ear infections
Parents caught in a cycle of ear infections and antibiotics are often looking for another way in. In a young child the tube that drains the middle ear sits nearly level, so fluid backs up easily. Tension in the upper neck affects the muscles and the drainage around that tube. Gentle care works to free that drainage so fluid moves the way it should. Your child's pediatrician handles the infection itself, and alongside that care, many families find the cycle eases.
Reflux, digestion, and sleep
Spitting up, gas, and restless nights often trace to the same early tension and a nervous system still finding its rhythm. Gentle care supports the nerves that run the gut and helps a baby settle. Parents tend to notice better sleep first.
Head turning and latching
A baby who turns the head one way far more easily, or who struggles to latch on one side, is usually holding tension from how they were positioned before and during birth. Gentle work to restore even motion in the neck helps with both, and nursing often gets easier within a visit or two.
For a fever or an active infection, your pediatrician comes first. Our care works alongside medical treatment, not in place of it.
Posture, backpacks, and screens
A heavy backpack pulls a child forward and to one side. Hours on a phone or tablet pull the head down and round the upper back. Over months that posture sets in, and it shows up as neck and upper-back tension, headaches, and a slouch that does not straighten on its own. Gentle care restores the motion, and simple guidance on the pack and screen time keeps it from coming back.
Growing, active bodies
Growth spurts stretch muscles faster than they can adapt, which is where growing pains come from. Add daily play and sport, and a young body picks up the same strains an adult would, in a frame that is still forming. Keeping the joints moving through these stretches helps a child stay comfortable and active.
Young athletes
Youth sports ask a lot of a growing body, and the strains add up over a season. We see young athletes for recovery, mobility, and staying in the game. Read more on our page for chiropractic for young athletes.
What a visit looks like
You and your child meet with Dr. John Dudley, who takes a history and examines how your child moves and where the tension sits. The treatment is gentle and brief. You leave knowing what was found and what comes next, if anything. The care stays conservative throughout.

Common questions
Is chiropractic safe for children?
The care is gentle and low-force, scaled to a child's age and size. It starts with an exam, and the technique uses light pressure or a low-force instrument, not a forceful manual adjustment.
Does chiropractic help with colic?
Many parents see calmer babies and less crying after a few gentle visits. Birth strains a newborn's neck, and easing that tension helps a colicky baby settle.
Do you see babies with recurring ear infections?
Yes. We work alongside your pediatrician, who treats the infection. Gentle care works to improve drainage in the middle ear, and many families find the cycle eases over time.
Why would an older child need a chiropractor?
Most often for posture strain from heavy backpacks and screen time, growing pains, and the soreness of youth sports.
What ages do you see?
From newborns through teens. We tailor the approach to the child's age and size.
