Vertigo and Dizziness Treatment in Mooresville, NC
Vertigo is disorienting and alarming. The room spinning, the inability to stand without holding onto something, the nausea that comes with it. Many people who come to us for vertigo have been to their medical doctor, had the acute episode managed, and then been left without a clear plan for what to do about the next one. Depending on the type of vertigo, chiropractic and acupuncture can be highly effective.
The types we work with
BPPV, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, is the most common type and is caused by calcium crystals in the inner ear moving into the wrong canal. It produces brief, intense spinning triggered by specific head positions, typically rolling over in bed or looking up. BPPV is treated with repositioning maneuvers, specifically the Epley maneuver, which moves the crystals back into the correct position. This is often dramatically effective and can resolve the vertigo in one to two sessions.
Cervicogenic dizziness is less well known but very common. It comes from the upper cervical spine, where the joint receptors and muscles provide the brain with information about head position. When those joints are restricted or irritated, the position signals they send become inaccurate, and the brain experiences that mismatch as dizziness or unsteadiness. This type of dizziness is often associated with neck pain and headaches and is frequently missed because it does not produce the classic spinning of BPPV.
Treatment
Chiropractic care. We perform the Epley maneuver for BPPV and address the upper cervical joints for cervicogenic dizziness. The two often coexist, and treating both produces the most complete resolution. Upper cervical adjusting for cervicogenic dizziness is often significantly effective when the correct diagnosis has been made.
Acupuncture. For vertigo with a nervous system or inflammatory component, and for the nausea and anxiety that accompany significant vertigo episodes, acupuncture provides direct relief and helps the vestibular system recalibrate. It is a useful addition for people whose vertigo is not purely BPPV. We offer a significant discount when you combine services.
Common questions
How do I know if my dizziness is BPPV or something else?
BPPV produces brief spinning triggered by specific head positions. Dizziness that is constant, associated with hearing changes, or accompanied by neurological symptoms like double vision or difficulty speaking needs medical evaluation before chiropractic treatment. We assess carefully at the first visit and refer when appropriate.
Is the Epley maneuver something I can do at home?
There are home versions, and they work for some people. Having it done correctly in the office is more reliable, and we can confirm the canal involved and verify that it has worked before you leave.
Can neck problems really cause dizziness?
Yes. The upper cervical spine is rich with proprioceptors that feed position information to the brain. Restriction or injury at C1 and C2 specifically can produce dizziness, unsteadiness, and a floating sensation that is genuinely vestibular in character, even though it comes from the neck rather than the inner ear.
