Scoliosis Care in Mooresville, NC
Scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine, and the way people respond to a scoliosis diagnosis varies widely. Some are told to watch it and come back when it gets worse. Others are told they need a brace or surgery. Most adults with scoliosis have had it for years, know the curve is there, and are dealing with the muscle tension, uneven loading, and chronic discomfort that go with it. Chiropractic care does not straighten the spine, but it does meaningful work on the symptoms and the function that make scoliosis hard to live with.
The picture we build
There are different types of scoliosis and different stages. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, the most common type, typically presents in the teenage years and may or may not progress significantly into adulthood. Degenerative scoliosis develops later in life as the discs and joints wear unevenly, and it is often the cause of back pain in older adults that does not fit the standard patterns. Functional scoliosis is caused by something outside the spine, leg length discrepancy, muscle imbalance, pelvis tilt, and is the most responsive to conservative care.
We establish what type is present, where the primary curve is, and what the functional picture looks like before we start treatment.
Treatment
Chiropractic care. The goal with scoliosis is not to straighten the spine but to maintain the best possible mobility in the curved segments, reduce the compensatory muscle tension that builds up around the curve, and keep the joints as healthy as possible over time. Regular adjusting also addresses the areas above and below the curve that are under compensatory stress because of how the spine is loaded. Many adults with scoliosis maintain well with periodic care and avoid the accelerated degeneration that comes with leaving the spine stiff and unattended.
Dry needling. The muscle imbalances that accompany scoliosis produce significant trigger point activity on the concave side of the curve, where the muscles are chronically shortened and overworked. Dry needling addresses this directly and often provides relief that adjusting alone does not fully achieve.
Acupuncture. For scoliosis with significant chronic pain, acupuncture helps manage the pain and reduces the nervous system sensitization that makes the back more reactive. We offer a significant discount when you combine services.
Common questions
Can chiropractic straighten scoliosis?
No. Structural scoliosis involves changes to the vertebrae and discs that cannot be reversed with chiropractic. What we can do is maintain the best possible function, reduce pain, and slow the degeneration that comes with leaving the spine stiff and under uneven load.
My child has scoliosis. Can you help?
Yes. We work with scoliosis across all ages. For growing children with curves that are being monitored, regular chiropractic care helps maintain the best possible spinal mobility while the spine develops.
How often do I need to come in for scoliosis?
It depends on the degree of the curve and the symptoms. Some people do well with monthly maintenance. Others need more frequent care during flare periods. We build the schedule around what your spine and your symptoms indicate.
