Our Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Hormonal Imbalance
Hormones do not work in isolation. Estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, cortisol, insulin, and thyroid hormone are all part of the same system, and when one is off, others tend to follow. That is why hormonal imbalance is rarely a one-hormone problem, and why approaches that only address a single hormone often produce incomplete results.
At our Mooresville office we address hormonal imbalance across three services: functional medicine, acupuncture, and Ayurveda. Each one works through a different mechanism, and together they address the hormonal system more completely than any single approach can.
The services involved
Functional medicine. This is where we build the complete hormonal picture. Standard hormone panels measure total levels at one point in time. That misses how hormones move through a cycle, how they are being produced and cleared, and whether the ratio between hormones is off even when individual levels look acceptable. We use more complete testing, including timed and dried urine panels that show how hormones are being processed, not just what is circulating. From there the plan addresses the actual causes of the imbalance: how the body is producing hormones, how the gut is processing and clearing estrogen, what the cortisol pattern looks like, whether insulin is driving androgen excess as it does in PCOS, and what nutrient deficiencies are affecting hormone production. We work alongside prescribing doctors on any hormone replacement decisions.
Acupuncture. Acupuncture has solid evidence for supporting hormonal regulation, particularly for cycle irregularity, PMS, perimenopause symptoms, and fertility. It works through the nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, which is the signaling chain that governs reproductive hormone production. Hot flashes, mood swings, irregular cycles, and sleep disruption all respond to acupuncture through this pathway. Many women use acupuncture as their primary tool for hormonal symptoms, and others use it alongside functional medicine care for a more complete approach. We offer a significant discount when you combine services.
Ayurveda. Ayurvedic care addresses the daily patterns and constitutional factors that shape hormonal health. Diet, meal timing, sleep, and herbal support are tailored to the individual rather than applied as a standard protocol. Laura Camby, our Ayurvedic practitioner and herbalist, builds these plans around the specific constitution she identifies in the intake. For hormonal imbalance, the Ayurvedic approach addresses the lifestyle layer that functional medicine identifies as important but does not always have the structure to implement: the specific dietary shifts, daily routines, and stress management practices that affect how hormones behave day to day.
The combined picture
Functional medicine identifies what is off and why. Acupuncture addresses the nervous system and hormonal signaling directly. Ayurveda builds the daily framework that supports hormonal balance between treatments. For conditions like perimenopause, PCOS, and cycle irregularity, this three-service approach addresses the hormonal picture at a level that no single service reaches alone.
Common questions
My doctor checked my hormones and said they were normal. Why would this be different?
Standard hormone testing is often a single blood draw that measures total levels. It misses how hormones move through a cycle, how they are being processed, and whether the ratio between hormones is off. We use testing that captures more of that picture because total levels alone often do not explain the symptoms.
Is acupuncture effective for hot flashes?
Yes. Acupuncture has consistent evidence for reducing hot flash frequency and severity. It is a good option for women who want a non-hormonal approach or want to complement what they are already doing.
Can men have hormonal imbalances too?
Yes. Low testosterone, elevated estrogen, and disrupted cortisol are common in men and often go unrecognized. The symptoms include fatigue, mood changes, difficulty building muscle, and low libido. We address these through functional medicine with the same thorough approach.
Is this instead of hormone replacement therapy or alongside it?
That depends on where you are. For early hormonal imbalance that has not yet reached the point where replacement is indicated, the functional and lifestyle approach is the appropriate first step. For people already on hormone therapy, we address the factors that affect how well it works. Any decisions about hormone replacement stay between you and your prescribing doctor.
