Our Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Chronic Fatigue
Chronic fatigue is poorly understood and consistently underserved. People come to us after months or years of being told their labs are normal, that they should exercise more, sleep better, reduce stress, and see how that goes. Some have been told it is depression. Some have been told it is just aging. Most of them know that something is genuinely wrong, and most of them are right.
Fatigue that does not resolve with rest, that has been present long enough to change how you live and work, almost always has more than one cause. That is why it rarely responds to a single intervention. At our Mooresville office we approach chronic fatigue across three services that address different parts of what drives it: functional medicine, acupuncture, and chiropractic. Here is how each one fits into the picture.
The services involved
Functional medicine. This is where we start with chronic fatigue, because the causes are almost always internal and require testing to identify. The most common ones we find are thyroid problems that standard panels miss, insulin resistance that has not yet moved glucose out of range, adrenal dysfunction where the cortisol rhythm is off, nutrient deficiencies that affect energy production at the cellular level, gut dysfunction that is impairing absorption, and chronic low-grade inflammation. Any one of these can produce significant fatigue. Several running at the same time produce the kind of fatigue that feels immovable regardless of how much someone sleeps. We run the testing that actually looks at these systems, build a plan around what we find, and track the response over time.
Acupuncture. Fatigue has a nervous system component that functional medicine addresses through nutrition and lifestyle, but acupuncture addresses more directly. Chronic fatigue is often accompanied by disrupted sleep, persistent low-grade anxiety, and a nervous system that cannot seem to shift into a recovery state. Acupuncture regulates the nervous system, improves sleep quality, and supports the hormonal patterns that govern energy across the day. Many patients notice their sleep quality improving before anything else does, which creates the conditions for the functional medicine work to take hold. We offer a significant discount when you combine services.
Chiropractic care. This one is less obvious for fatigue, but there is a real connection. Poor spinal mechanics and chronic muscle tension are a low-level physical stressor that the body has to work to compensate for. That compensation draws on the same resources that energy and recovery require. Patients with chronic fatigue often carry significant neck and upper back tension, and addressing that tension through adjusting removes a physical drain on the system that the person may not have even noticed was there. It also improves sleep posture and reduces the pain that is frequently part of the fatigue picture.
The combined picture
The three services address different layers of the same problem. Functional medicine identifies and addresses the internal causes. Acupuncture supports the nervous system and improves sleep quality so the body can actually recover. Chiropractic removes the physical stressors that drain energy in the background. The progress tends to be faster and more complete when they run together than when any one runs alone.
Chronic fatigue takes time to address because it has usually been building for years. We set realistic expectations at the first visit and track progress specifically: energy levels, sleep quality, cognitive clarity, and the lab markers that were off when we started. When something is not moving, we say so and adjust the plan.
Common questions
My doctor says my bloodwork is normal. Why would this be different?
Standard panels check a narrow set of markers against ranges designed to identify disease, not to catch early dysfunction. We use a broader panel with different reference points, and it is common to find things worth addressing in people who have been told their labs are fine.
Could my fatigue be post-viral, such as after COVID?
Yes, and we see this pattern regularly. Post-viral fatigue has a distinct set of contributing factors, including immune dysregulation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and nervous system involvement, that we address through the functional medicine and acupuncture combination specifically.
Is this instead of medication or alongside it?
For chronic fatigue without a single diagnosed cause, what we do is generally the appropriate first step, since the causes we find respond to nutrition, lifestyle, and targeted support rather than medication. For people already on medication for a related condition, we work alongside that. Any changes to prescriptions stay between you and your prescribing doctor.
How long before I notice improvement?
Sleep quality often improves first, within a few weeks of starting acupuncture. Energy and cognitive clarity follow as the functional medicine work takes hold, typically over two to three months. We track your progress and adjust as we go.
