Introducing Functional Medicine and Ayurveda

Picture
Over the years in my practice, I've seen the same frustrating pattern play out again and again. Patients come in feeling exhausted, dealing with digestive issues, struggling with hormone problems, or battling autoimmune conditions. They've been to multiple doctors (including me!), followed all the advice, taken the prescribed medications—yet they still don't feel well.
Maybe this sounds familiar. You've probably heard "your labs look normal" or "it's just stress" or "this is normal for your age." But you know something isn't right. You remember feeling better, having more energy, sleeping through the night. You sense your body should be capable of more than just getting by.

We Are Expanding Our Services!

Recognizing that these chronic conditions often require more advanced diagnostic capabilities and comprehensive treatment approaches, I have made the decision to expand our services to include Functional Medicine and Ayurveda: two proven methodologies that excel at addressing these exact challenges through root cause investigation and individualized care.

The Reality Behind Modern Health Struggles

Here's what I've come to understand - we're dealing with health challenges that previous generations never faced. Much of our food comes from laboratories instead of farms. We're exposed to thousands of chemicals that didn't exist sixty years ago. Our stress levels are through the roof, and we're constantly overstimulated. Our sleep patterns are disrupted by artificial light and endless screen time.

These aren't just minor inconveniences, they're creating real health problems that don't fit into neat diagnostic boxes. You might have "normal" lab work, but you're exhausted. Your thyroid numbers look fine, but you can't lose weight. Your colonoscopy is clear, but you still have digestive issues.

The problem isn't that you're imagining things or that you need to just accept feeling lousy. The problem is that most of the factors affecting your health aren't being looked at or addressed.

How Functional Medicine Is Different

This is where Functional Medicine comes in, and it has been transformative in so many peoples lives. Instead of waiting for you to get sick enough to fit into a disease category, Functional Medicine asks a simple question: why is this happening in the first place?

We use advanced testing that goes way beyond standard lab panels. We're looking at things like whether you're actually absorbing nutrients from your food, how well your liver is processing toxins, what's happening with your gut bacteria, and whether chronic inflammation is affecting your entire system.

Research shows that many cases of "unexplained" fatigue stem from hidden infections, nutrient deficiencies, or environmental toxin exposure. Studies demonstrate that autoimmune symptoms often improve dramatically when food triggers are identified and removed while gut barrier function is restored. These aren't random improvements: they're the predictable results of finding and addressing actual underlying problems instead of just managing symptoms.

Here's what we can do with Functional Medicine that conventional medicine typically doesn't:

Find the hidden problems: Testing that reveals nutritional deficiencies, toxic burdens, hormone imbalances, and inflammatory patterns that standard tests miss completely.

Look at optimal ranges, not just "normal": Standard lab ranges tell us if you're sick enough for medication, but we want to know if you're functioning at your best.

Address modern lifestyle factors: We look at how your specific diet, stress patterns, sleep quality, and environment are affecting your health.

Create a plan that's actually for you: No cookie-cutter protocols. Your treatment plan is based on your unique test results, health history, and what's actually going on in your body.

Work with your body, not against it: Instead of suppressing symptoms, we support your body's natural ability to heal and function properly.

This approach has shown remarkable success for people dealing with chronic fatigue, digestive problems, hormonal issues, autoimmune conditions, and those mystery health problems that seem to have no clear solutions through conventional approaches.

The Benefits of Ayurveda

We're also adding Ayurveda as one of our offered services. This 5,000-year-old system of medicine has sophisticated approaches to individual health that complement what we're doing with modern functional testing. We're fortunate to have Laura, a certified Ayurvedic practitioner, providing these services.
What makes Ayurveda valuable is that it starts with the premise that we're all different. What works great for your neighbor might not work for you. Ayurveda helps us understand your unique constitution and what your body specifically needs to thrive.

We'll be able to help you with:

Understanding your body type: Your constitution (called your dosha) influences everything from what foods energize you versus what foods make you feel sluggish, to what type of exercise supports your health versus what burns you out.

Personalized nutrition and lifestyle guidance: Instead of generic advice, we can give you specific recommendations based on your individual constitution and needs.

Natural healing approaches: Using traditional Western and European herbalism alongside Ayurvedic principles to support healing.

Prevention and balance: Catching imbalances before they become major health problems.

The goal isn't to follow an ancient lifestyle, but to use these time-tested insights about individual constitution to help you make better choices for your specific body and health needs. Thousands of years of successful application combined with modern research validation make Ayurveda a powerful complement to functional medicine approaches.

Why Our Practice Is Different

What makes our approach unique isn't just that we're adding these services, but that we understand how all these pieces fit together. We've seen how modern life creates health problems, and we know that addressing them often requires looking at multiple factors at the same time.

We understand that your chronic pain might not just be about your spine: it might also involve inflammation from food sensitivities, nutrient deficiencies affecting muscle function, or stress patterns that keep your nervous system wound up. Your digestive issues might not just need probiotics but might need us to address the underlying causes of why your gut lining is damaged in the first place.

This is why combining our chiropractic and acupuncture care with Functional Medicine and Ayurveda can be so powerful. We're not just treating symptoms in isolation—we're looking at your whole health picture and addressing it from multiple angles.

How These Work Together

Both Functional Medicine and Ayurveda share some important principles that make them work really well together:

  • They look for root causes instead of just managing symptoms
  • They treat you as an individual rather than using one-size-fits-all approaches
  • They work with your body's natural healing ability instead of overriding it
  • They focus on prevention and maintaining health, not just treating disease
  • They understand that everything in your body is connected

What This Means for You

These services don't replace our chiropractic and acupuncture care, they enhance them. Many patients benefit from combining approaches. For example:

  • Someone with chronic pain might get chiropractic adjustments for structural issues, acupuncture for nervous system balance, and Functional Medicine testing to find and fix underlying inflammation
  • A patient with digestive problems might receive Ayurvedic guidance about foods that work for their constitution, Functional Medicine testing to identify specific imbalances, and acupuncture to support digestive function
  • Someone dealing with fatigue might get Functional Medicine assessment of nutritional and hormonal factors, Ayurvedic lifestyle recommendations, and chiropractic care to optimize nervous system function

Next Steps

If you've been struggling with health issues that don't seem to have clear answers, if you've been told everything looks "normal" but you don't feel normal, if you sense your body should feel better than it does—I'd love to talk with you about whether these approaches might help.

We can schedule a discovery call/visit to discuss your specific situation and see which approach, or combination of approaches, might be the best fit for you. If you decide to try Functional Medicine and/or Ayurveda, we'll talk about your health history in much more detail, what you've tried before, and what your goals are.

My commitment to you remains the same as it's always been: helping you achieve the best health possible using safe, natural, and effective treatments designed specifically for your individual needs. Now we just have more tools to make that happen.
