Our Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Anxiety
Anxiety is real, it is physical, and it is not simply a matter of thinking differently or managing stress better. The nervous system is stuck in a state of activation that it cannot find its way out of on its own. That state has causes, some of them psychological, but many of them physiological, and the physiological ones are the ones that most anxiety treatment never touches.
At our Mooresville office we approach anxiety across three services: acupuncture, functional medicine, and Ayurveda. Each one addresses a different layer of what keeps the nervous system in an activated state, and together they give the body more than one pathway back toward balance.
The services involved
Acupuncture. Acupuncture is the most direct nervous system intervention we have. It activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the body's rest and recovery state, and reduces the activity of the sympathetic system that drives the anxiety response. Regular acupuncture changes the baseline activation level of the nervous system over time, not just for the hour after a session. It also regulates cortisol patterns, improves sleep quality, and addresses the physical side of anxiety: the tight chest, shallow breathing, muscle tension, and digestive symptoms that accompany chronic anxiety and make it worse. We offer a significant discount when you combine services.
Functional medicine. Anxiety has physiological contributors that are worth identifying and addressing. The most common ones we see are thyroid dysfunction, blood sugar instability that produces adrenaline-like surges when glucose drops, adrenal dysregulation from chronic stress, nutrient deficiencies that affect neurotransmitter production, gut dysfunction since the gut produces a significant portion of the body's serotonin, and chronic inflammation. These factors make the nervous system more reactive and harder to calm, regardless of what else someone is doing to manage anxiety. Identifying and addressing them changes the baseline the person is working from.
Ayurveda. Ayurvedic care addresses anxiety through the daily rhythms and habits that either settle or aggravate the nervous system. Diet, sleep timing, meal timing, and specific herbal support are tailored to the individual constitution rather than applied generically. Laura Camby, our Ayurvedic practitioner, builds these plans around the individual and the specific constitution she identifies in the intake. For people whose anxiety has a strong physical component, the Ayurvedic approach to routine and nervous system regulation works well alongside acupuncture and functional medicine because it addresses what is happening day to day rather than only in treatment sessions.
The combined picture
The three services work at different timescales and through different mechanisms. Acupuncture regulates the nervous system directly. Functional medicine addresses the internal physiological factors keeping it reactive. Ayurveda builds a daily framework that supports nervous system stability between treatments. That combination reaches parts of the anxiety picture that any single approach misses.
We do not suggest people stop other treatment they are doing for anxiety. Therapy continues. Medication continues. What we address are the physiological factors that contribute to the anxiety picture, which neither therapy nor medication alone reaches.
Common questions
Can acupuncture help with anxiety right away, or does it take time?
Most people feel a noticeable shift in their nervous system state during or immediately after their first session. The lasting change in baseline anxiety level comes with regular treatment over weeks to months.
Could my anxiety be related to gut health?
Yes. The gut and brain communicate directly through the vagus nerve, and a disrupted gut bacterial community sends altered signals that influence mood and anxiety. Gut health is often part of the functional medicine picture for anxiety.
Is this instead of medication or alongside it?
Alongside it. We work within whatever treatment you are already doing. Any changes to medication are between you and your prescribing doctor.
Do you offer telehealth for the functional medicine part?
Yes. Functional medicine consultations are available via telehealth across North Carolina. Read more about telehealth.
